Owner Builder Course NSW | Owner Builder Compliance Process - Live And Learn

Anyone intending on making an application to NSW Fair Trading for an Owner Builder NSW Permit will be required to complete the Owner Builder course before making the application. Please check the NSW Fair Trading Website at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au to determine whether you satisfy the conditions to obtain an owner builder NSW permit before enrolling in this course.

The Owner Builder course is offered in one of two ways: (1) Distance learning - whereby the course material is emailed to you and you work at your own pace in your own time; and (2) Face to face classroom delivery - whereby 8 hours of tuition is provided with an emphasis on the activities that you are required to complete as part of the assessment.

By distance learning / correspondence.

1. Students MUST have completed the course Work Safely in the Construction Industry (the White Card course) before enrolling in this course. For course dates for the White Card course offered by Live and Learn please refer to the "Workcover OHS White Card" section of this website.

2. Identification - proof of identification and a photocopy of the student's White Card are required to be provided to Live and Learn at the time of enrolment. Acceptable forms of proof of identification include a drivers licence, passport or an RTA photo card.

3. Students must be 18 years of age or older to undertake this course.

4. Standard of English - students undertaking this course must be able to read, write and understand English. Candidates must be able to complete the assessments in the English language.

Anyone who is proposing to do owner builder work in NSW where the value of the proposed work is $15,000 or more must complete this course before making an application to NSW Fair Trading for an owner builder permit.

Distance / correspondence learning will be a self-paced mode of learning where candidates are provided all learning and assessment resources via email. Candidates learn at their own pace and have access to support from trainers via telephone or email. Once candidates have completed their learning, activities and assessments they forward their completed activities and assessments back to Live and Learn Pty Ltd for judgment on competency. Candidates will have six months from the day of enrolment to complete activities and assessments and have them returned to Live and Learn.

The course cost is $165.00. If you require a paper version of the learner and assessment resources (rather than an email version) then extra charges of $66 plus postage charges will be incurred. The course cost does not include the cost of the White Card course.

Candidates will be required to succesfully complete the Learning Questions and Underpinning Knowledge Questionnaires. Answers must be typed and returned to Live and Learn by email or in hard copy.

Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive a Statement of Attainment in Owner Builder Compliance.

You will learn about many facets of the owner builder process including: how to prepare to be an owner builder in NSW; how to apply OHS requirements; policies and procedures in the construction industry; how to read and interpret plans and specifications; how to undertake basic estimation and costing; how to administer contracts; how to plan and organise work; and how to conduct workplace communication.
